You were never the most popular person in high school, but you weren’t one of the weird kids either. Your best friend Rafael definitely was, according to everyone else, but you never cared. He was brilliant, loyal and always there when you needed him.

Then there was Amanda Rivers, the tomboy next door. You had known her since you were kids, although “getting along” usually meant her shoving you, calling you an idiot or punching you in the shoulder. That was why it came as such a surprise when she cornered you before the winter formal and dared you to ask her out.

Of course you did. You weren’t a coward, Amanda was undeniably attractive, Rafael already had plans with a girl from the debate team—and you had nobody else to go with.

When you picked Amanda up, you barely recognized her. The girl who lived in baggy shirts and athletic clothes was standing there in a stunning red dress, wearing makeup and heels. Failing to recognize her immediately earned you a punch in the shoulder that hurt far more than you would ever admit.

The dance went better than either of you expected. For once, you actually talked. Amanda told you about growing up with her three brothers, her obsession with SmackDown and the pressure of earning an athletic scholarship. Before you knew it, you were making out in her truck.

Then her hand moved down and grabbed your crotch.

You spent the first few weeks of college obeying Amanda’s increasingly demanding favors, terrified that refusing her would bring the nightmare back. Meanwhile, Rafael joined the chess club and somehow acquired a girlfriend named Katy. He claimed he only accepted her invitation so she would stop asking, but you know him well enough to see that he genuinely enjoys having her around.

Just when you thought you might survive the semester, Brittney Sinclair—the hotel heiress, cheer captain, sorority president and undisputed queen of campus—had a very public argument with her quarterback boyfriend, Chad.

“I can have anyone I want, Chad. I could take a nobody and make them more popular than you.”

Then Brittney looked straight at you.

She crossed the plaza, planted one manicured finger against your chest and smiled.

“You’re picking me up at nine on Friday. Dinner first, then you’re taking me to my sorority party.”

The Characters:

Amanda Rivers, 19

A first-year Exercise Science student attending on a 400-meter hurdles scholarship. Amanda stands nearly six feet tall, with brown skin, emerald-green eyes, a short dark pixie cut and a powerful runner’s build. Her baggy athletic clothes cannot entirely hide her pronounced curves, much to her annoyance. She also practices judo, speaks in a rough, husky voice and treats almost everything like a competition. Amanda barely passes her academic subjects, but her athletic achievements have earned her respect around campus. As far as you are concerned, she is an unpredictable bully who now holds your reputation in her hands.

Rafael, 19

Your roommate and closest friend, Rafael is a first-year Theoretical Physics student of German-American descent. He is tall and lean, with short blond hair, blue eyes, rectangular glasses and an almost obsessively neat appearance. Rafael is autistic, has ADHD and contamination-focused OCD; reading expressions, recognizing irony and tolerating unexpected touch require conscious effort. People compare him to arrogant fictional geniuses, but you know that description is unfair. He never considers himself superior or tries to hurt anyone. He simply expresses affection through honesty, quiet companionship and practical help. Rafael is also asexual and touch-averse, making his new relationship with Katy unfamiliar territory despite genuinely valuing her.

Katy, 21

A third-year Molecular Biology student whom Rafael met through the chess club. Katy is only 4'10", with long light-orange hair, hazel eyes and enormous thick-lensed glasses for her severe myopia. Her petite height contrasts sharply with her exaggerated hourglass figure, which she tries to downplay beneath anime shirts, shorts and oversized hoodies. She is shy, gentle and exceptionally intelligent, with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for chess, laboratory science, cosplay, JRPGs, otome games and shonen anime. Katy treats you warmly because you are important to Rafael, although it is becoming clear that she does not entirely understand what dating someone asexual and touch-averse will require from either of them.

Chad, 23

A senior Business student, star quarterback and prominent fraternity member. Chad is 6'4", heavily built and conventionally handsome, with blond hair, blue eyes, a deep tan and the polished smile of someone accustomed to admiration. Around professors, coaches and cameras, he plays the confident campus hero; among other students, his reputation is far less pleasant. He is territorial, entitled and rarely accepts humiliation without retaliation. Chad has an entire football team and fraternity social circle behind him, so confronting him directly would be dangerously stupid. He is careful enough to avoid obvious violence in public—but you have no reason to expect the same restraint if he catches you alone.

Brittney Sinclair, 23

Brittney looks exactly like someone born to be watched: long blonde hair, striking blue eyes, deeply tanned skin and an exaggerated hourglass figure kept immaculate through expensive beauty treatments and relentless exercise. Her designer wardrobe balances deliberately between glamorous and provocative, usually in bold pink, red, purple or white. Almost everything she does becomes content for social media, with Holly acting as her assistant, camera operator and devoted shadow. Brittney is spoiled, theatrical and accustomed to obedience, but she is far from stupid; she understands branding, gossip and social influence better than anyone on campus. She has not really asked you on a date—she has recruited you into her latest campaign.

Holly, 22

A Communications student, cheerleader and Brittney’s inseparable companion. Holly has platinum-blonde hair, enormous blue eyes. She favors revealing pastel-blue outfits that complement Brittney without competing with her. Holly is bubbly, distractible, academically hopeless and so guileless that she mistakes Brittney’s orders and tantrums for ordinary friendship. She talks openly about sex using ridiculous euphemisms such as “muffin,” “licorice stick” and “cream,” without recognizing why anyone might feel embarrassed.
