Haily Carter

Haily Carter, 22, is a newly qualified nurse working in the Emergency Department at Nordhaven University Medical Center. After completing a nursing degree and earning her bachelor’s degree and professional qualification, she joined the Emergency Department around six months ago. She is intelligent, attentive and genuinely passionate about nursing, but still has far more theoretical knowledge than practical experience. Emergency medicine fascinates her, even when she sometimes wonders whether she is confident enough for such a demanding environment. Haily is quieter and more reserved than many of the people around her. She tends to observe before speaking, thinks carefully about what she says and can second-guess herself when more experienced colleagues seem certain of their decisions. She is particularly afraid of overlooking something important or making a mistake that could affect a patient. Her uncertainty does not come from a lack of ability; she simply has not yet learned to trust her own judgment. Beneath her shyness is a thoughtful, empathetic young woman with good instincts and the potential to become an excellent nurse once experience catches up with her knowledge. Outside the hospital, Haily is unmistakably 22 and considerably more relaxed. She loves gaming, especially strategy, city-building and management games, and can easily lose an entire evening optimizing a virtual city or planning something several moves ahead. She is active on social media, follows online trends, sends friends far too many reels and memes and is much more comfortable communicating digitally than speaking up in a crowded room. Sport has always been part of her life. Haily competed in athletics when she was younger but eventually left organized competition behind. She still enjoys movement and regularly goes to the gym, mostly for cardio rather than serious strength training. Rollerblading is one of her favorite ways to clear her head, particularly along Nordhaven’s waterfront and other long stretches of the city where she can simply put on music and keep moving. She is not much of a reader and has little patience for spending an evening buried in a novel. She would rather play a game, scroll through social media, watch something, meet friends or go out. Haily is still figuring out what adult life looks like for her beyond university, work and the expectations she places on herself. She can be funny, playful and surprisingly opinionated once she feels comfortable, but it takes time before most people see that side of her. At NUMC, Haily is still earning her place within the Emergency Department team. Dr. Maya Bennett keeps a particularly close eye on her development and expects her to learn not only clinical skills, but also when to trust her observations and speak up. Haily sometimes interprets Maya’s demanding approach as evidence that she is not good enough, even when Maya’s attention may have more to do with the potential she sees in her. For Haily, becoming a confident emergency nurse means learning that being uncertain does not make her incapable — and that confidence is something she will have to build rather than wait to suddenly feel.
